The Ecological Forecasting Initiative (EFI) is holding their 2023 Unconference at NEON Headquarters! NEON staff are excited to work with the participants "to work together on products such as developing forecasts, automating forecasts, developing teaching materials/tutorials, refining or creating software tools, analyzing forecasts for a manuscript, developing visualizations, or working on other activities proposed by the participants. There will be a particular focus on using NEON data. The meeting will provide an opportunity to learn new approaches and skills from other participants."

NEON staff will be participating in and supporting the Environmental Data Science Innovation & Inclusion Lab's first Innovation Summit! These summits are designed to facilitate idea-sharing and create conditions for intellectual creativity to foster innovative research.

The goals of the 2023 Innovation Summit are to:

Define a decadal research agenda for the growing field of environmental data science by articulating the most pressing environmental challenges and opportunities for solutions-oriented science, and by bridging environmental and biological sciences, social sciences, and data and computational sciences
Build a diverse and inclusive ESIIL Network by establishing collaborations with others from different disciplines, sectors, career stages, and backgrounds around research themes of interest

The Ecological Forecasting Initiative Student Association (EFISA) is hosting an Early Career meeting on June 14-15. This 2-day meeting will focus on enabling early career (undergraduate students, graduate students, postdocs) scientists to participate in ecological forecasting. We will specifically focus on enabling early career scientists to participate in the EFI RCN NEON Ecological Forecast Challenge by providing skills-based workshops that teach fundamental and applied skills for forecasting, as well as highlighting forecasts in development by students and early-career researchers for submission to the EFI RCN NEON Ecological Forecast Challenge. You can also apply what you learn from this meeting to the upcoming Beetle Community Forecast Challenge (first submission due June 30). Register to submit your forecasts here.

Ecology is a field known for close, personal collaborations and camaraderie in the lab and in the field. But with the COVID-19 pandemic disrupting laboratories, colleges, and universities around the world, ecologists have been challenged to reimagine what it means to teach and do ecology as a community. To address this challenge, NEON Scientists Claire Lunch and Donal O'Leary will join the Ecological Research as Education Network (EREN) Faculty Mentoring Network (FMN) to discuss NEON educational resources including teaching modules, data skills tutorials, and YouTube videos. These resources are used successfully in numerous curricula and for self-guided study so that our field can continue to move forward through this pandemic and into the new normal.

The resources listed below will be discussed during this meeting, and will remain on this page in perpetuity as a reference for meeting attendees and other NEON data users.

Teaching Modules:

NEON staff and external faculty scientists have developed numerous teaching modules that are designed to be ready-to-implement lessons for undergraduate-level ecology instruction. These resources are hosted on the NEON Group Page on the Quantitative Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis (QUBES) hub webpage qubeshub.org

Data Skills Tutorials:

NEON and collaborators have developed 140+ data skills tutorials that span a variety of subjects including basic R skills, orientations to NEON-specific datasets, and series on themes such as remote sensing and biodiversity. Here are some links to the most relevant tutorials for getting started with NEON data:

Download and Explore NEON Data is your first stop for learning how to access NEON data and load it into an R environment.
Using an API Token when Accessing NEON Data with neonUtilities is a great lesson on how to sign up for a NEON data portal account and use your personal token to increase your download speed and track your important data access metrics.
Access and Work with NEON Geolocation Data is an excellent introduction to NEON's spatial data, including the precise (x,y,z) coordinates for NEON field observations.
Download and work with NEON Aquatic Instrument Data uses NEON's AIS data to explore our extensive quality control metrics and data flags. This is essential reading if you are using NEON data in your research!

Virtual Data Help Desk at EGU

The Virtual Data Help Desk, which is a program of the European Geosciences Union (EGU), the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP), and EarthCube, provides researchers with opportunities to engage with informatics experts familiar with their scientific domain to learn about skills and techniques that will help further their research and make their data and software open and FAIR.

The Virtual Data Help Desk will be staffed with experts from NEON and the Earth science informatics community to answer data-related questions and to demo useful resources. NEON will be participating in the Virtual Data Help Desk in three ways:

Answering Data Questions: You can share your questions any time from May 4th-May 8th via Twitter using the hashtag #DataHelpDesk. Data experts at NEON will monitor the twitter and answer questions surrounding topics like finding, sharing, analyzing, publishing, and citing data.
Data Demos & Tutorials: NEON will provide tutorials and demos about accessing and using NEON data. Links to the these demos and tutorials are TBD.
Virtual Office Hour: NEON will host a virtual office hour on accessing and using NEON data on Webex on May 7th from 8AM to 9AM MST(16:00 - 17:00 CEST).

Virtual Office Hour at EGU

Donal O’Leary, a Research Specialist at NEON, will be sharing a brief presentation on how to access and use NEON data, and will be happy to field your data questions. Donal earned his PhD in Geographical Sciences from the University of Maryland, and is well-versed in the analysis of ecological, environmental, and remotely-sensed data, primarily within GIS and R-based computing environments.

The goal of the workshop is to synthesize a set of goals and objectives for the next phase of the national effort to deploy the data held in our natural history collections for research and education, and to suggest strategies for meeting these goals and achieving these objectives including technological advances, new community standards and potential partnerships. The workshop will be the culmination of a yearlong effort to reach out to the collections and research communities to determine their views on what is needed for natural history specimens to realize their full potential for addressing research, education, and environmental challenges.

The outcome of the workshop will be a new strategic plan for maximizing the value of data from biodiversity collections for research, education and public policy. Our hope is that the new strategic plan will provide a framework for a new NSF funding program, much as the Network for Integrated Bioccollections Alliance Strategic Plan influenced the original development of Advancing Digitization of Biological Collections (ADBC) funding program, which began in 2011.
